The Skewer’s mix-and-mash-up supremo Jon Holmes hosts BBC Radio 2’s (unofficial) Christmas party – celebrating the cult art of the pop music mash up, with a little help from his fellow presenters.
Jon Holmes – surely the best-connected man in radio after his stints at 6 Music, Xfm, Radio 4 and, er, Power FM – throws open the studio doors and invites his radio mates round for a bit of a festive knees up. Jeremy Vine has brought a trifle, Zoe Ball is leading the Macarena on the dancefloor, and Scott Mills has the VIP area on lock. But no-one is allowed in unless they’ve brought a gift for the playlist: their favourite banging musical mash-up.
For your Boxing Day delight, Jon will unpack two hours of underground pop-music mash-ups, championing the audio alchemists who’ve struck gold by mixing one song with another to create something jaw-droppingly different. These remixes and bootleg beats will surprise, delight and stop you in your tracks with a ‘how-did-they-do-that?’ in equal measure. And can we create a Christmas collaboration to rival the best on the night?
If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you put a bunch of radio DJs in a room, then this is the show for you. Because leave our music-loving DJs to have a natter, and within minutes you can guarantee they’ve got their phones out, playing each other their favourite classic mash-ups.
Bangers: Mashed is your perfect Christmas playlist. So turn it up to 11 and marvel at the magic of mash-ups like ABBA vs. Van Halen – ‘Super Jumper’, Adele vs. Daft Punk – ‘Something About The Fire’, and Coldplay vs. Oasis – ‘Don’t Look Back At Yellow’.
(And, by the way, Bangers: Mashed is a GREAT title. Even if we do say so ourselves)
